MTB 101 Online

$99.00

Are you Mountain Bike Curious? Get started the smart way with our MTB 101 Online Course — designed for new riders in Maine who want to learn the essentials, build confidence, and join a friendly community.

What you’ll get

  • 3 x 1.5hr Virtual Workshops via Google Meet (April 8, 15 and 29 7-8:30PM EST)

  • Access to Online Course Material

What you’ll learn

  • What mountain biking really is, how it differs from road and gravel riding, and what to expect on singletrack.

  • Types of riding and bikes: Downhill, cross-country, trail, bikepacking, gravel crossover — explained simply so you can choose the right style and the right bike for your goals and budget.

  • Maine-focused trail guide: Overview of the best beginner-friendly areas across Maine — Portland-area trail systems, Bangor region rides, greater Acadia access, western mountains, and quiet local favorites — including difficulty, typical trail conditions, and seasonal tips.

  • How to find people to ride with: Practical strategies for joining group rides, local clubs, meetup tips, and how to approach group skill levels so you ride safely and have fun.

  • Starter equipment checklist: Bike selection basics (frame, wheel size, suspension), essential clothing, helmet fit and types, gloves, basic shoes, hydration packs, lights, and a prioritized list so you spend only on what increases safety and enjoyment.

  • Basic bike maintenance and safety: How to check your bike before a ride, fix a flat, basic drivetrain care, and a simple pre-ride checklist to avoid common problems.

Why this course works for new riders in Maine

  • Built for Maine conditions: Trail selection, seasonal cautions (mud, ice, spring closures), and local gear advice make it relevant from coast to mountains.

  • Bite-sized lessons: Short virtual workshops and access to online content make learning manageable between work and family life.

  • Community focus: Guidance on finding local groups and a roadmap to join community rides safely and respectfully so you never have to head out alone.

What you’ll be able to do after the course

  • Confidently choose a first mountain bike and essential gear within your budget.

  • Identify nearby beginner-friendly trails and plan rides appropriate for your skill and fitness.

  • Join group rides and connect with local riders.

  • Perform basic maintenance and pre-ride checks that prevent common mishaps.

Customer Feedback

Dr. Elizabth Abbas
  • “I attended Coach Lindsay's 3-day women's downhill camp, coming in with minimal experience and a lot of fear from a past crash. Lindsay's coaching was nothing short of transformative! She taught me not only how to ride safely but also how to truly enjoy the thrill of downhill mountain biking. Her contagious enthusiasm and focus on building foundational skills helped me conquer double black diamond trails and tackle jumps and drops with confidence. By the end of the weekend, I was riding fearlessly without crashing. Thanks to Lindsay, I've since gone on to race and podium in downhill, enduro, cross-country, and ultra-endurance mountain bike events. Her coaching has given me a solid foundation that I think of every time I ride. I couldn't be more grateful for Coach Lindsay and her incredible business—she's truly made a lasting impact on my mountain biking journey!"

    Dr. Elizabeth Abbas

  • “Lindsay is a fantastic instructor: an absolute treasure trove of helpful information, which she delivers with compassion and enthusiasm, creating a safe learning environment for you to experiment with new techniques and tricks. She will definitely help you become a better rider!
Highly recommended, 5 stars and a big 🫶.”

    Ray - Bethel, Maine

  • “10/10 would definitely recommend! Lindsay had agreed to give me a beginner lesson, but before we even started she fixed the position of my brake levers and shifters, greatly increasing my comfort and safety. She covered all the basics of body position, cornering, looking ahead, and really took my skills and confidence to the next level.

My work includes small-group clinics, workshops, guided rides, and longer-form learning opportunities, primarily in Maine. Our last spring Women’s MTB Workshop was a blast! Allspeed in Portland hosted us with a bright inviting space, cold bevies and a taco truck ready to serve hungry bellies. 🍻🌮🌮 We discussed all things bike fit, with an emphasis on: - finding the correct saddle height and angle - handlebar / stem options to customize fit and handling of your ride - brake lever placement to facilitate proper body position and enhance control - suspension setup and adjustments - pedal options (and why I LOVE flats!) We wrapped things up by checking out Allspeeds fine assortment of helmets and protective gear and took a quick peek at @wild_rye_ apparel, which we will have a much closer look at back at Allspeed on the 21st! 👚👀 And a fun ride from the shop with myself and @tiradenny !! Special thanks for coach @nickellina for joining me to help the ladies with the hands on of bike setup! Nicole and I later headed down to coach at @hale.1918 for Everwild Women’s MTB Day and you can find Nicole and I at @elevatemtbfestival in June as well as here in Maine coaching bikes all season long. If you want to know where I’ll be coaching next, please join the Still Peaking email list (link in profile). I am already getting booked up by events and organizations and it’s an exciting but overwhelming time of year. I don’t have time to post everything to social media (sad face), so if you are wondering what’s up reach out! I will have public group classes posted soon, but if you are looking to hire me privately this summer for a specific date please get in touch ASAP as I am prioritizing my private clients this season! It is so much fun working with clients one on one or in small groups, customizing a curriculum and/or planning a fun all day MTB adventure. 🚵‍♀️🌯🌞 oh YES of course! And the bathroom award for Allspeed… absolutely the brightest bathrooms yet (smells sparkly too!) 🚽✨ #women #mtb #mtbwomen #207 #207mtb #womensworkshops #bikesetup

We had a blast at Pat’s in Brewer, Maine last night for our second Women’s MTB Workshop of the season. 🚵‍♀️🌷🤗 After going over everything you should check before heading out on a ride, we dove into what you should be carrying with you on rides to tackle the most common trailside repairs. 🛠️👩‍🔧🧰 Pat’s is stocked with a wide variety of multi-tools, pumps, tubeless puncture repair kits, CO2, tubes and bags to carry these items. We found a killer deal on a @mucoff tubeless repair kit, which cleverly hides in your handlebars. Marked down to $20 from $55 retail, there is ONE left hanging on the wall. 🤑 After going through all of the pre-ride preparations to hopefully prevent but ultimately be able to tackle common mechanicals we got down and dirty with a traditional flat tire fix. Everyone had a chance to experience the joy of removing and reinstalling the rear wheel and tire 😅✨ We struggled to get one of Abby’s tires seated perfectly because of a rim issue so Scott pulled out a medieval looking torture device to force it into place (he reminded us you wouldn’t carry this on trail). 🤪 We had enough time at the end of the workshop to play with a chain tool and learn why you you don’t want to push the pin all the way through 🤣 We didn’t have Megan on tap for photos, so special thanks to Abby for grabbing some shots while simultaneously wrestling tires. Pat’s gets an award for not only having an acceptably clean bike shop bathroom, but a great collage of old timey race photos that reminded me of my younger years. #maine #womensmtb #trailsiderepairs #207mtb #women #mtb

We learned about: - What to check on your bike before heading out on a ride - What you should be carrying with you for trailside repairs - Traditional flat tire fix (with tubes) Additionally, we had a lot of laughs, maybe some inappropriate jokes and talked about future plans to meet up and ride this season. We dug into Joanna’s pack to see what her husband had packed for her and had a good laugh (we know he meant the best!) Currently Rainbow has the BEST bike shop bathroom. Clean, bright and has a bidet seat.🥇🚽 Special thanks to the one and only Megan Anderson for helping capture the moment (we have some funnnny videos to share soon).
